In the heart of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park, an hour and a half from Rome. The house sits in a quiet spot with a covered parking space, and the centre of Ovindoli is a fifteen-minute walk away: close to everything, away from the noise.
At 1,375 metres the nights stay cool even in the height of summer: no air conditioning needed, just open the window. The ideal break from the heat of Rome, between hikes, walks and doing nothing at all.
Abruzzo is the greenest region in Europe and one of the least visited in Italy. There are no queues here, no ticketed timeslots, no menus in six languages. Ovindoli is a working mountain village of about 1,100 people, two hours from Rome and a world away from it.
The Sirente-Velino Regional Park covers more than 50,000 hectares and you can walk its trails for a whole morning without meeting anyone. Even in August the villages of the Altopiano delle Rocche stay quiet, and in the shoulder seasons you often have the mountain to yourself. Wolves, red deer and the Apennine chamois live here; golden eagles nest on these slopes.
The trattorias around here cook for their neighbours, not for visitors. Arrosticini grilled over coals, gnocchi with marcetto, saffron from Navelli, Rocca di Mezzo potatoes, lentils from Santo Stefano di Sessanio, pecorino from flocks that still move up the mountain in summer. Prices are what Italians pay.
A complete Roman town at Alba Fucens with its forum and amphitheatre, largely to yourself. The Medici village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. Rocca Calascio, the highest fortress in the Apennines. L'Aquila, a capital city rebuilding itself stone by stone. All within an hour or so, all without a coach park.
In the spring of 2025 Ridley Scott brought the crew of The Dog Stars here — his post-apocalyptic film with Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley and Guy Pearce, in cinemas from August 2026. The Abruzzo scenes were shot inside the Sirente-Velino Park, and one of the filming areas — Campo di Via, marked on site by a council information board — lies a few hundred metres from the house, a few minutes away on foot.
